Some first class meeting advice.

  1. Gain access. If you don't already have a home computer, or you were thinking that you need to upgrade your home computer, do it. How can you master weaving technology into your curriculum if you can't practice it day in and day out yourself, at home, for yourself? Who will ask me about Fast Access?
  2. Be patient. It takes time for new ideas and new tools to gain hold and have lasting and powerful effects. Be patient ... with yourself, your collogues, and your students. Remember, learning only takes place if we make mistakes.
  3. Have a Purpose: Computers are not IT. This class is not about computers. It is about educators doing what for hundreds of years we have always done -- integrate technology into pedagogy.
  4. Every class will start with questions. Keep in mind that the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask.
  5. I will usually schedule more that I can get done in one night's class.
  6. Often, in response to a question -- I will suggest that you ask again in a little while. Most students forget to ask again. Make a commitment to yourself NOT to be like most students.
  7. I will make every effort to complete (most) changes to our syllabus by 4:00 PM the Sunday before our next class. If you remind me that I was late in doing so, you will be encouraging me to be more diligent in my work. This is important to you.
  8. Can you help me find spelling and grammar errors in our class syllabus? Send comments and corrections to: George.

In Class tonight:

  • Complete your Class Web Page (get your picture taken tonight before you leave).
  • Do you have an eMail address? If not, every UNO student can have a UNO eMail address.
  • Be sure you have access to eMail before our next class.
  • Read about class participation, Evaluation and
  • Self-evaluation.
  • What is multimedia?
  • Finished ... NOT ... Explore these links.
  • What if we finish early? What is an Information Network?

    House Keeping

  • You can expect that this Syllabus page will change every week Changes will (almost always) be ready by 4:00 PM on Sunday before class.
  • (Almost) All assignments are due at 4:00 PM on Sunday before class. So, days in advance of every class -- you can know what to expect!
  • You are expected to keep up with not just your weekly assignments, but that of all your classmates. All assignments will be available to everyone vie eMail or our Discussion Board.
  • You will be expected to complete a rubric soon that will be used to complete your self evaluation. You will turn in your rubric to George in a few weeks. Visit "Links to Explore" to learn more about rubrics. Consider your rubric like a to-do-list of what you want to accomplish in this class. You will complete a rubric now, but I expect that it will change over time -- as you learn more about what you what to learn more about.

    Assignment for next week:
Turn in before 4:00 PM Sunday
  • You can expect that there will be an assignment (almost) every week.
  • Weekly assignments are always due on the Sunday before each class.
  • Everyone in class benefits from your timely completion of these assignments.
  • Remember, to earn an A in this class, assignments MUST be completed on time!
  • After doing some research, what is your opinion of the significance of redCaps? Send this eMail before Saturday. This is necessary to verify that everyone is sending to and receiving mail from our list, iceCap. Send this eMail before Saturday even if your message is "I have no idea what is a redCap."

  • Assignment: Due by 4:00 PM, on the Sunday before our next class. Who will be the first to ask me how students in our class become members of our list, iceCap.
Respond to the following by sending eMail to iceCap.
  • Everyone in class will be responsible for reading chapter(s) from Online Education.
  • List the topics of your reading assignment
  • In 1-page maximum, summarize what you read. Then, tell me and your classmates what you think about what the author said. As best you can, identify the author, what is his background? Is he qualified to write such a book?
  • Important suggestion: Use your word processor to create and edit this assignment. Save it for yourself on your own computer. When it is complete, copy and paste the document into an eMail message to iceCap.
