Questions: anything and everything!

Tomorow's written assignment

Just a reminder of our Four things:
  1. Gain access. If you don't already have a home computer, or you were thinking that you need to upgrade your home computer, do it. How can you master weaving technology into your curriculum if you can't practice it day in and day out yourself, at home, for yourself?
  2. Be patient. It takes time for new ideas and new tools to gain hold and have lasting and powerful effects. Be patient ... with yourself, your collogues, and your students. Remember, learning only takes place if we make mistakes.
  3. Have a Purpose: Computers are not IT. This class is not about computers. It is about educators doing what for hundreds of years we have always done -- integrate technology into pedagogy.
  4. Ask for Help: I am not asking you to discover oil, invent the process to distill gasoline, then build a lawnmower. All I ask is that you cut the grass. Get help ... all the help you want. Ask classmates, friends ... ask your kids.

House Keeping
  • We still have one unnamed group?
  • Are you receiving mail from Emma? This is important to your success in this class. Speak up now ... if Emma is not talking to you!
  • Everyone will now logon to TEC classroom computers using their own user name and password -- the password you received when you setup your Class WebPage, remember? You have privileges to change this password if you like, but I recommend that you DO NOT -- this is the same password your will use for changing your Class WebPage, for journaling, and for FTP access to your Web Site for this class.
  • Once you are successful in logging in as yourself -- you will need my help:
    1. to set Internet Preferences -- what's that?
    2. before you run Netscape Communicator for the first time, don't tell me you already did it?
    3. Internet Explorer may also need some configuring, so wait for me.
    4. to use iMovie ... but I'm still working on where to save such large files.
  • All of us now have private FTP access to the College of Education's Web Server. This includes space to set up your web sites -- in other words, your very own URL. See the index page for our class. It points to each of your URLs, home page? Who can tell me what is the URL of our index page? Who can tell me what is the URL to their own web page? Who can tell me how to start editing this existing (but way Too Simple) Web Page?
  • Let's go over how to use our Discussion Group. Everyone will need to Register as a user ... and remember to Log In as that user every time. If needed, you should practice using this today in class. You are required to post your next assignment to our Discussion Group.
  • We also need to review and practice using our Chat Room.
  • Later in class we will review what is FTP and how it works.
  • The ability of our class to have virtual meetings on Thursdays depends on everyone in class demonstrating that they:
    1. are exchanging eMail using our list Emma.
    2. can upload and download documents to our Web Server using FTP.
    3. understand how to use our Discussion Groups.
    4. are practiced using our Chat Rooms.
    5. have proved that all of the above works with the computer(s) that will be used to complete virtual class meeting assignments.
  • One more thing, everyone is required to do a journal entry after every class -- before leaving class. This is part of your evaluation -- class participation, worth 30 points towards your final grade. Journaling is supported by links on our Class Web Pages. The purpose of this journal is to provide us with feedback on in class activities, and for you to reflect for a few minutes before leaving the TEC computer lab. Everyone is welcome to read journal entries, and you can even review all your own journal entries. Your password is required to add journal entries and to view just your own entries. Anyone can view the journal, entries appear in order by most recent. I will review journal entries after every class. I expect to see an entry from everyone from every class -- especially our Thursday virtual class meetings.
  • In Class Today
  • REMEMBER! sign all your eMail with your full name so that everyone knows who the message is from ... like when I am recording attendance.
  • Let's talk about our book -- Growing Up Digital. do you really think this book is worth buying?
  • What is a home page?
  • What is a Holmes page?
  • What is HTML?
  • How do you copy and paste URLs?
  • What's the difference between .htm and .html?
  • What do I need to start building my own web site?
  • What is the difference our assignments sent to Emma (our list) and assignments posted to our Discussion Group?
  • Can I use an existing site to help start mine?
  • Where do I find graphics to use on my site?
  • Everyone will edit there "Too Simple Web Page"
  • Don't forget to Journal before leaving today!
