Using Spreadsheets or Databases

A Multimedia Document, using Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel

Numerous reports decry the deficiencies in thinking skills of students at all educational levels. An important cause of these deficiencies (among many others), we argue, is the over-reliance of educators at all levels on a singular form of knowledge representation. David H. Jonassen and Chad S. Carr

Research activities and recourses to support using spreadsheets and databases in an educational setting. This support can be as a tool for teaching or for teacher productivity. In no less than one (1) page, discuss 2 ideas about how spreadsheets or databases can be used in education. Attach this document to an eMail message to our list -- iceCap. Copy and paste the text of this document to the assignments section of our message board. The message and eMail are due at 4:00 PM the Sunday October 14.

Your document should be constructed using Microsoft Word and/or Excel and include several features of advanced desktop publishing and multimedia covered in our classes during the past weeks.

This is a instructor graded assignment, worth 10 points towards your final grade in this class. There are no wrong answers. This is your chance to demonstrate that your skill set is advancing (I build better MM documents). Do your best.

Grading rubric:
  • 9 points -- (Very Good Work) Document includes more than 3 advanced desktop publishing and multimedia features as discussed in class, including at least one inserted graphic and at least one link to the World Wide Web. AND, document includes features of a spreadsheet or database.
  • 8.5 points -- (Good Work) Document includes 3 advanced desktop publishing and multimedia features.
  • 8 points -- (Acceptable) Document includes 2 advanced desktop publishing or multimedia features.
  • 7.5 points -- (Needs Improvment) Document includes 1 advanced desktop publishing or multimedia feature.
  • +1 point -- Document converts to a web page and retains its look and feel (better than Exam 1 did)
  • +1 point -- Document in the author's own words and is well written.
  • An appendix to your document should list the multimedia features you used to construct your document.

This assignment will become one item in an electronic portfolio you will build during this class. Your portfolio will be the basis for assessment of your final grade.
