Book Review, April 3, 2001 -- a chat over space and time!

Pam Brierre.........this is a test. It is only a test. In the event that
this was a real chat, someone would respond to your
message. Do not panic. Thank you This has been a
                    message from a bored student.
John Charles........Is anybody here?
John Charles........Pam, where are you?
John Charles........Oh, I must be early!
John Charles........Hi, Pam
Pam Brierre.........Not so early, I am here.
Pam Brierre.........I was having a devil of a time logging in to web
crossing. The same name and password never seems to
                    work twice.
John Charles........I know what you mean. I had a hard time finding the
                    chat room.
Pam Brierre.........i don't know if anyone else is coming, but after
George's e-mails, I wanted to make sure tht I could do
this from home. Tomorrow I will let the kids watch a
video while I am "in class" Any idea how long we will
                    be in class?
Pam Brierre.........Hello?
John Charles........I think the process will be clumsy at best. Who will
talk and in what order. It will be interesting. How
long do you want to talk tonight. I am satisfied that I
can do it. Sorry I'm taking so long!
Pam Brierre.........No worries. I think we will probably crash the server
at least once. I don't know if George has done this
before, but am curious to see how well it works
John Charles........How well do you type? I am slow!!!
Pam Brierre.........My mother made me take typing in hihg school summers
school. She said it maight be needed. I got a B. I
was so bored on e day I typed an USA flag. The teacher
                    wasn't amused.
Pam Brierre.........You don't need to hang around. Hi Todd!
John Charles........What's up Todd
Todd McMahon........Have I missed much?
John Charles........NO!
John Charles........Trying to improve my tying
Pam Brierre.........I said I would be here for about ten minutes so anyone
who wasnted to check in and give it a try could. Todd,
how many times do you think we'll crash the sever
                    tomorrow?
Todd McMahon........I am willing to give it my best shot.
Pam Brierre.........What a goal. George would be so proud!
John Charles........Anybody going to hang around. I'm saying good
                    night
Todd McMahon........I wonder if he's lurking without our knowledge.
John Charles........Ptobably
Todd McMahon........Pleasant dreams John.
John Charles........Great typing, Huh
Pam Brierre.........I don't know if anyone else is coming, but thanks for
coming. I'll hang for a few more minutes to see if
                    anyone else comes visiting.
John Charles........Good night!!
Pam Brierre.........'Night
Todd McMahon........This isn't too hard.
Pam Brierre.........No, but I truly believe we will crash tomorrow several
times. How long do you think we'll be "in
                    class"
Todd McMahon........George said an hour.
Pam Brierre.........That works. What time did he say to be here again. i
                    deleted the message.
Todd McMahon........My wife says they didn't crash and they had four
different conversations going for two hours.
Todd McMahon........Look at the top of the window you are in right
                    now.
Pam Brierre.........That's good to hear (or read). What about it?
Todd McMahon........Higher.
Pam Brierre.........Today's date?
Pam Brierre.........Oh, I see. The time. Got it.
Pam Brierre.........Ki Gail!
Todd McMahon........And more enter the cyber circus.
Gail Silverstein....Hi, sorry I'm late...tomorrow I guess I'd better be on
                    time.
Pam Brierre.........Glad you could make it. Welcome to chaos
                    central
Pam Brierre.........Did you have any problems getting in here from
                    home?
Gail Silverstein....Absolutely not...good idea to test it.
Gail Silverstein....Do either of you have a clear understanding about our
                    final?
Todd McMahon........This will get more interesting when 10 of us are all
                    typing at once.
Pam Brierre.........Great. Okay, well, I said we'd be here for ten minutes.
John came and went with a successful test visit. I
don't know if anyone else is coming but I'll stay in
until 9:15 then I gotta fix my web site. George and I
screwed with my internal links and they are all messed
                    up.
Pam Brierre.........You are right. Ten people should make this a noisy room
and we can't see anyone raising their hands!
Gail Silverstein....Thanks for setting up this practice.
Gail Silverstein....C U tomorrow.
Pam Brierre.........Todd, if I want to back out of one web folder in my site
and go into another one, how do I do it?
Todd McMahon........../"folder name"/"file name". That should do
                    it.
Pam Brierre.........what do the ../ do?
Todd McMahon........../ backs you up one level. ../../ backs you up two
                    levels, and so on.
Pam Brierre.........I see. Okay, I am going to go now and see if I can fix
my site. Read ya' tomorrow night. Bye!
Todd McMahon........bye.
charla branch 2..... t
charla branch 2..... t
George..............hit it george
George..............Hi Gail
Gail Silverstein....Hi, I practiced last night so I know this works
George..............First one in gets a + one letter grade!
Gail Silverstein....Okay, I'm psyched!
George..............I see you also sent your attendance
Gail Silverstein....Just hoping that I do not experience tech
difficulties.Yesterday my connection was being reset by
                    peer.
George..............I think we can expect that someone will have technical
                    problems
George..............Are you at home?
Gail Silverstein....Yse, any word from Julie?
George..............I am looking forward to our chat tomorow ... it is a
good example of "classroom without walls"
George................. haven't heard from Julie, she did post her 2nd book
                    review
George..............Hi Pam
Pam Brierre.........Hi
George..............So far ... it you and I and Gail
Pam Brierre.........A few of us chatted last night to see if this would
                    work
Gail Silverstein....woops! English teacher makes spelling error. Can't type
as fast as I thought. Hi Pam.
George..............Pam, did things work OK last night?
Pam Brierre.........Hi Gail. Nice to read you again. Thanks for coming
                    last night.
Pam Brierre.........Yeah, things worked fine. John, Charles and Gail came
to chat. We were on for 15 minutes or so
George..............Pam, are you at home?
Pam Brierre.........yes
George..............What's for dinner?
Gail Silverstein....It was a great idea because I have only "lurked" in chat
rooms. Today I'm sure there will be more to discuss
                    because we have an agenda.
Pam Brierre.........Hi Todd
George..............Todd, hi!
Gail Silverstein....hi todd
Todd McMahon........Hello all.
Gail Silverstein....Dinner, I thought that at the end of class each of our
doorbells would ring and dinner would be
                    delivered.
George..............Julie, Hi!
Gail Silverstein....Hi Julie.
Julie Bergeron......hey guys
George..............Dinner ... can we order dinner from our chat
                    room?
George..............Hi Charla!
Julie Bergeron......so gail, we're doing a chat in the classroom tomorrow
                    nite?
Gail Silverstein....no Weds. on Tues., remember?
Todd McMahon........Bad, bad, julie.
George..............Todd, are you at Loyola?
Todd McMahon........Yes I am.
Julie Bergeron......george i used the chat with steven site today with my
                    class, hope that's ok
Pam Brierre.........Does Netscape or Explorer have a chat room?
Gail Silverstein....hi charla
George..............Julie, use chat with anyone you like or don't like ...
it technology integration and Web Authoring.
Julie Bergeron......that's why i used it, i integtrated chat into my
                    classroom today
Pam Brierre.........George, where did you take the attendance
                    picture?
George..............Pam, chat is software seperate form browsing ... but you
can do instant messaging with just a bowser.
Todd McMahon........Most teachers are trying to stop the chatting in their
                    classroom.
George..............What is the attendance picture?
Julie Bergeron......i want yall to know, my whole operating system was down
for a week, i just got it back up tonite
George..............Hi John!
John Charles........Hello everyone!
Todd McMahon........Cypress knee.
Julie Bergeron......i am so proud because i created an emergency repair disk
and booted from dos with a floppy....cool huh?
George..............Good job Julie, just in time.
Pam Brierre.........The picture on the syllabus where we sign in our
                    attendance.
charla branch 2.....Hello everyone....I made it.
Julie Bergeron......most trouble was getting signed in with compuserve
                    again
Todd McMahon........Wouldn't have to do that on a Mac.
George..............Todd is right, its a cypress knee
Pam Brierre.........I know...where did you take it?
Julie Bergeron......charla you've been in and out a few times, do you know
                    that??
Todd McMahon........So how many conversations can we have going at one time
                    in one chat room?
John Charles........Many
Pam Brierre.........Teachers are capable of holding several conversations at
                    once.
George..............The picture is from the (cann't spell it) Atchetflia
                    SpillWay.
Pam Brierre.........I like it.
George..............We can have too many conversations at once
George..............OK ... we have about 10 minutes to fool around ... and
then its to the books -- reviews that is.
Todd McMahon........Here I sit in cyberspace, not knowing the look that's on
your face. Is anyone else aware, who's sitting in theri
                    underwear.
Julie Bergeron......it takes me nmore than ten minutes to fool around
                    george
Julie Bergeron......i'm so bad
Pam Brierre.........Try pajamas
Julie Bergeron......yes pam i did, ty
SAMAR SARMINI.......Hi everyone..
Pam Brierre.........Hey Samar
Julie Bergeron......hello
George..............How can you tell if I'm smiling :>)
charla branch 2.....Julie, thanks...I usually don't chat online...
Todd McMahon........By the speed of your internet connection.
George..............or angry :>(
Todd McMahon........;)
charla branch 2.....I haven't the slightest idea why there is a 2 behind my
                    name.
Pam Brierre.........:} Have you seen the e-mails and books with hundreds of
                    these funny things?
Julie Bergeron......colon dash parenthesis
George..............how about <)
George..............or winking, like Todd
Julie Bergeron......yes i have, it's special characters and there is an html
                    code for those too
John Charles........This is a strange conversation.
George..............Hello Mr. Le
Pam Brierre.........Hi Mr. Le
George..............hi Samar
John Charles........Hi mr le

SAMAR SARMINI.......I agree, we need a decoder
John Charles........hi samar

                    chatting away i can deal
SAMAR SARMINI.......Hi George
cle.................Hi! Dr. George!
Todd McMahon........Eating? You can't eat unless you brought enough for
                    everyone.
John Charles........Will we virtually enjoy it?
George..............Virtual food, now there's a diet!
Julie Bergeron......i do have a virtual boyfriend
Pam Brierre.........Cyber food, what a great diet.
cle.................Dear Dr. George: my computer down at home. I am in our
                    classroom.
Todd McMahon........I'd still burn it.
John Charles........0 calories
Pam Brierre.........0 taste
Pam Brierre.........George, was the server down this morning?
SAMAR SARMINI.......was the system down around 4:00 p.m. today?
cle.................Dear Mr. Todd Mcmahon: please show me how to fix my
                    PC.
Julie Bergeron......we im and email a lot almost daily but i only see him in
person twice or so a month???so is he really there??? my
friends think i made him up cvause they never see me
                    with anyone
Todd McMahon........It seemed to be on and off most of the day.
George..............Pam UNO's network has been up and down for the last
                    couple of weeks
SAMAR SARMINI.......I thought I had to go down to UNO
Todd McMahon........cle -- buy a Mac. Sorry had to say that.
John Charles........Pain
George..............OK, who's missing?

John Charles........john
Julie Bergeron......chippa will probably goto the classroom
Julie Bergeron......to get away from the noise at home
George..............Just in case you are wondering ... first, we will talk
about Pan's book : Net Lessons: Web-Based Projects For
                    Your Classroom
cle.................Oh! Mr. Todd Mc Mahon: Please tell me about the picture
                    tonight.
George..............We will start in about 2 minutes.
John Charles........i WANT TO KNOW TOO
John Charles........count down
charla branch 2.....Charla
George..............What is it, Tod?
Gail Silverstein....about the picture...what is a knee in relationship to a
                    tree?
cle.................Hi Mr. John! How are you night?
Pam Brierre.........It is another way for the tree to get air.
George..............You can't have a knee without a tree
John Charles........great, Mr. Le
Pam Brierre.........Where'd Samar go?
John Charles........when the wind blows
George..............OK, take a big breath ... and get ready to talk about
                    Pam's book.
Todd McMahon........I need a bigger window to read all this typing that is
flying by me. Slow readers suffer here.
George..............Try to keep the number of unanswered question to a
                    minimum.
Pam Brierre.........waddya want to know?
Todd McMahon........There you go George, pissing off students again.
George..............Students ...
cle.................Dear Dr, George: mr. Bob said, "It is Cypress kees in
                    wamp." Is'nt it?
George..............OK 1 minute pause
George..............Let's give Pam a chance to say something interesting
                    about her book.
George..............Then Comments or questions.
Pam Brierre.........I like the idea of the book. It gave me a place to
start when creating my own lessons
cle.................Hi Ms. Silverstein!
Pam Brierre.........The format was clean and simple. The lesson plans well
                    layed out.
George..............Keep the number of unanswered question to a
                    minimum.
Pam Brierre.........The lessons in general have alot of interaction with
classes and people around the country and world. I am
still unsure about the best way to initiate this, but it
does give you ideas and resources to try to meet other
                    classes
Julie Bergeron......so pam, how much of the lesson is done thru the internet
and what part does the classroom teacher play in
                    this?
cle.................Dear Ms. Silverstein: You did not tell me about our
                    final project yet. Did'nt you?
cle.................Dear Mr. Charles: Where are you?
Pam Brierre.........A basic idea is presented. For example math. Students
creat questions about the subject - amount of garbage
recycled, pounds etc. and then compare with students in
                    other environments.
John Charles........Mr. Le, George asked not to talk
Todd McMahon........I liked the idea of hooking up with classes around the
world and getting their perspectives on a topic.
Pam Brierre.........They number crunch in class with teacher supervision.
Grade levels might go from 3-12 so the teacher needs to
                    adapt accordingly.
George..............So Web lessons can expand the bounds of our classrooms
.. . is this what Todd said?
Pam Brierre.........Students with guidance might develop a questionaire to
submit to faculty, parents, school wide etc. They then
post it to a web site or e-mail and compile responses.
This all might take several weeks.
SAMAR SARMINI.......The time constraints always nags me when reading such
lesson plans.. Did the book deal with this
                    issue?
Julie Bergeron......i did something like that last year by comparing my
class's tessellation art to a class in north
                    dakota
John Charles........This type of class needs to be standards based
Pam Brierre.........Each lesson covers more than one subject area so it is
                    across the curriculum teaching.
John Charles........definitely standards based!!
cle.................Dear Mr. Mc Mahon: my second book review is "The Web
Proxy Servers" writen by Ari Lutonen, who had years work
                    with Tim Berners Lee. work
Pam Brierre.........The one things it doesn't give is evaluation procedures.
I guess because so many lessons cover such a wide range
                    of grades.
cle.................Dear Mc Mahon: I believe that you will like the book
because you are able to use it. To me, it is so
                    difficult.
Pam Brierre.........Any other questions? Iwas surprised that a computer
book four years old could still be applicable, but I
                    think it is.
George..............Yes, Pam, assessment of web lessone need addition
                    consideration beyond traditional ...
Julie Bergeron......have to create rubrics and decide what your objective is
                    ahead of time
John Charles........The assessments must be decided ahead also
Pam Brierre.........I suppose so. The objectives are listed, just not
                    evaluation procedures
Gail Silverstein 2..but you must do that for any medium used
Julie Bergeron......yes what methods of assessment will be used
Pam Brierre.........Check out the publishers web site on my review. It
links to some sample sessons from the book.
John Charles........Look at the age range.
Julie Bergeron......good point gail, teaching is still teaching no matter
                    what medium your'e using
cle.................Ye. I will.
SAMAR SARMINI.......It was a good idea to have these sample lessons. I
would have enjoyed seeing more though..
cle.................I am sorry. Yes. I will.
Pam Brierre.........My question is how early can you really do something
like this? Can you do it with 7 year olds?
Julie Bergeron......i don't think so, i teach computers ages k-8 and i would
say 3rd grade is the youngest to handle this
George..............OK ... lets take a 1 minute break ... and now we will
talk about John's book. Web Teaching Guide. Its
                    the
George................. same topic as Pam's
Pam Brierre.........hiccup
Julie Bergeron......below that age takes too much time, explainign and
explaining again how to use the technology
Todd McMahon........Why not? My 5 yr old does an amazing amount on the
                    net.
George..............Give John a chance to make a couple of comments.
Julie Bergeron......but your 5 year old comes from an intelligent family who
                    help her
Julie Bergeron......most families do not
Gail Silverstein 2..or Julie, they are not being offered the opportunity in
                    school.
John Charles........My book is a guide to creating websites for educators.
It touches on virtually every aspect of creating a
                    site.
George..............OK ... lets take a 1 minute break ... and now we will
talk about John's book. Web Teaching Guide. Its the
                    same topic as Pam's
Julie Bergeron......the 5 year olds i teach, can barely type in their name
and still fogret what enter does
George..............Give John a chance to make a couple of comments.
Todd McMahon........Picture based "web quest" could help. Point and
                    click.
Todd McMahon........Sorry George.
Pam Brierre.........Are the educators writing sites for the public or their
                    classes.
Julie Bergeron......i'm starting from scratch with these kids and by the
time they've been exposed to tech, by third grade this
would be easy, until then...not unbless they are
                    gt
cle.................Yes.
George..............Are the educators writing sites for the public or their
                    classes.
John Charles........It covers everything we have discussed in class from
platforms to copyrights to specific techniques
cle.................yes. they do.
John Charles........I liked the book because it was easy to read and
John Charles........it is a guide to the references needed.
John Charles........Sarah Horton takes nothing for granted
John Charles........Anyone can read this book
Pam Brierre.........Does it talk about using spcific programs or just
building a good framework for an educational site for
                    public and students.
John Charles........It is a general reference but it does use
                    Photoshop
Pam Brierre.........$$$$
John Charles........Otherwise, no specific software is mentioned
John Charles........I agree, Pam
Julie Bergeron......so are we talking about software or weeb based?
Julie Bergeron......web based?
John Charles........Webbased
Julie Bergeron......the software you're talking about now is the softeware
                    to create the web lesson
SAMAR SARMINI.......I liked the idea that links should provide info that is
supplemental not essential to your own web
                    site..
Julie Bergeron......well here we go back to Dr. Longstreet's idea of
                    tutorials
John Charles........That is a warning that I need to adhere to
charla branch.......I agree Samimi
Pam Brierre.........We have all gotten lost in cyberspace link, link,
linking and forgotton our main objective and our
                    starting page
John Charles........It suggests that links are placed at the end of the
                    narrative
Julie Bergeron......with a clear way back to maintain on task
                    behavior
John Charles........The type of writing for the web, scanning
Todd McMahon........The eye opener for me was writing style. Write for
scanning. There is a whole new paradigm.
John Charles........Will the colleges teach it
Gail Silverstein 2..It's like reading the newspaper...headlines, scanning
                    for what is of interest.
Todd McMahon........They will in a web course. Just like journalism teaches
to write very, very short sentences.
John Charles........We then become journalists
SAMAR SARMINI.......It is a new idea, though how would it affect the amount
                    of benefit the reader get?
George..............Good comment Todd ... scanning is a reading style
                    supported by web content
John Charles........If the reader links to the website and doesnt go to the
                    first page
SAMAR SARMINI.......Wouldn't it affect attention span and make it even
                    shorter?
John Charles........then the topic content is not lost
Julie Bergeron......and more than 60 characters per line of text makes it
                    not as easily scannable
Todd McMahon........What is the benefit from reading a newspaper?
Pam Brierre.........Short attention span theatre - we want immediate
gratification. If it doesn't grab our attention, we
                    surf away
John Charles........The Picayune??
Todd McMahon........Let's use a little more substantial newspaper.
George..............OK 2 minute breake ...
Pam Brierre.........Wall Street Journal
Pam Brierre.........Where does Charla keep going?
George..............Let's give Todd a chance to say something about his
book: Teach Yourself JavaScript 1.3 in 24 Hours.
George..............What is JavaSccript?
Todd McMahon........What? Me already?
Pam Brierre.........Why do I need to know?
George..............Good question pam
John Charles........SAve $$$$$$
Pam Brierre.........how
John Charles........no need for the software
George..............Give us an example of what I can do with JavaScript that
I can't do with a "normal" web page?
Julie Bergeron......have you learned to write new java scripts or are there
a limited number that can be used?
John Charles........Simulation needs special attention.
Pam Brierre.........Have you ever written a BASIC porgram. It was a pain!!!
There are too many reasonable and free
                    alternatives
Julie Bergeron......and why would i need to learn to write it if i can
                    download them free?
John Charles........According to SArah Horton, simualtion cannot be handled
                    with the "basic" software
Pam Brierre.........Simulation?
John Charles........BASIC was a pain!
Todd McMahon........Can I get a thought out here? Boy I am slow today.
It's the little things that matter. For simple
information exchange HTML is fine but JavaScript gives
                    some nice options..
Pam Brierre.........What can it do that HTML can't. I still don't know
                    exactly what it is
SAMAR SARMINI.......Hi Li..
John Charles........Simulation like Sim City
Li Wang.............Sorry it took me so long to get in. I just found the
                    right spot.
Julie Bergeron......i think javascripts create more interaction...forms,
rollover effects, etc???am i correct todd?
Todd McMahon........An "active" webpage is one example. The user can add
text or numbers to the page and the webpage will work
                    with it.
Pam Brierre.........Like when you register a piece of software
                    online?
Todd McMahon........And yes roll overs, pop-up windows.
cle.................Sometime we need create our own web page by using
                    javascrits. program
John Charles........Like doing a chemistry experiment online
Julie Bergeron......does the book teach you to write new java scripts or
                    write the existing one>
John Charles........What happens if
Li Wang.............Todd: I followed your instruction to search program
downloadable to edit those ptoto images. But no
                    luck.
Todd McMahon........In some cases it is my understanding you could. CGI is
used more for writing to a server.
Julie Bergeron......can't you download javascripts into your html and get
                    the same effe cts?
Li Wang.............BUT, guess what? Dreamweaver did it for me! Under
                    Windows section, there's "create album"
Li Wang.............I think most of the time, javascripts are
                    hidden.
George..............Is there something that I see on a web page that gives
away the fact that its JavaScript and not HTML?
Todd McMahon........The book gives examples of basic scripts that can be
manipulated. One of the first is a simple clock count
down let's say to your birthday. The user can input
their birthday and the web page that is created can tell
them how long in minutes or seconds or what ever until
                    the big day!
Todd McMahon........Interactivity.
Julie Bergeron......the push and pull of info is created by java
                    scripts?
Todd McMahon........That's why I love DreamWeaver. It does the scripts for
                    you.
George..............Interactivity ... is a key. Normal web pages are static
                    ... text and pictures
Julie Bergeron......so layovers are java too?
Gail Silverstein 2..If I wanted to offer my students quizzes on line then I
would use this tool, if I understand correctly.
Li Wang.............Not necessary.
Todd McMahon........I would use Blackboard.
Pam Brierre.........Did this book help you? Do you better understand how to
use javascript? Would it help a clueless soul like
                    me?
George..............Your mean rollovers ... like in buttons that change when
                    you point at them.
SAMAR SARMINI.......animation seems to be better with Java, right?
Todd McMahon........See, here's the deal. I don't like raw code
programming. I like to use programs to do the work for
me. This book gave me a good idea what these programs
                    are doing.
Julie Bergeron......no i meant lay overs (probably not the right word) but
the way dreamweaver aloows you to lay one image over
another or text over pictures, etc
charla branch.......Is Java good for creating cross wordpuszzles?
Li Wang.............But you still need to understand what those codes stand
                    for.
Todd McMahon........If it doesn't do exactly what I want I can go in and
                    tweek it.
Li Wang.............yeah
George..............Ok, since Li Wang is with us not, and her book is
Web-Teaching: A Guide to Designing Interactive Teaching
                    for the World Wide Web
John Charles........Must know some jave to do that
Li Wang.............I am here!
George..............What does she thing about Designing interactive
                    pages
Li Wang.............interactive to me is including discussion, cirtual
classroom, and other stuff you included in our class web
                    page.
Li Wang.............Cirtual, Virtual. Sorry
Pam Brierre.........Is she talking about creating a total web based lesson,
                    or a web supported lesson.
Li Wang.............a total
Pam Brierre.........No teacher interaction. The students sits at the
computer to learn everythink the teacher
                    desires?
George..............So, our web'Xing "discussions" are interactive web stuff
... and our chat is web interactive stuff?
Gail Silverstein 2..just a lesson, or more like on-linelearning - devoid of
                    classroom?
Li Wang.............You think NOT?
George..............My point is that we all don't need to know what is, or
how to do JavaScript to benefit for using it.
Li Wang.............Todd just mentioned Blackborad. I happened to be in a
                    Balckboard introduction workshop.
George..............Blackboard is an example of an interactive web based
                    system ?
Li Wang.............That Blackboard is not virtual blackbroad, it's a
on-line blackbroad as interactive as the traditional
                    one.
Todd McMahon........If you want to give a computer based quiz, it certainly
has the format down. You don't even have to grade it.
It's all automatic. You can even put in responses for
                    right or wrong answers.
Julie Bergeron......am i correct in saying when we use the word interaction
we are talking about the pushing and pulling of
                    information?
Todd McMahon........Parts of blackboard are interactive.
Gail Silverstein 2..Julie's definition is a good one when relating the term
                    interactive to technology
Julie Bergeron......ty gail
SAMAR SARMINI.......when you mentioned blackboard, Todd, I thought you were
                    making a joke.. Sounds interesting..
cle.................How about Java, Javascript, and Activex
                    security?
George..............OK OK ... take a 2 minute break ... get a drink of water
... next we will talk to Gail
Pam Brierre.........Li, did you like the book?
Li Wang.............Interactive is students get feedback from other students
and the instructor. Other students and instructor get
                    feedback from you.
George..............OK OK ... take a 1 minute break ... get a drink of water
... next we will talk to Gail
George..............Gail's book is : Internet Communication in Six
                    Classrooms-Conversations Across Time, Space, and
                    Culture
Li Wang.............Not 100%. I wish the book would have been more...
                    illustrative.
George..............How do I have a conversation over time?
John Charles........We are having one now!
Gail Silverstein 2..This book offered a new perspective on communication.
There's a new genre - internet language which is not
normal written, but not oral language.
Pam Brierre.........Cyberspeak
Julie Bergeron......yes ty, jk, lol
Li Wang.............I can chat with my friends iall over the world.n
                    different time zone
cle.................Also talking too.
Julie Bergeron......{{{{julie}}}} ----)
Pam Brierre.........What does all this typetalking do to the English
                    language and sentence structure?
John Charles........Julie, what is that?
Julie Bergeron......hugging julie, a rose for
Julie Bergeron......ty thank you, lol laugh out loud, jk just
                    kidding
Todd McMahon........The same thing the 60's did to language.
Li Wang.............And also I can go to any search engine to search those
documents that link me back to history, to different
culture. That's a kind of communication across time,
                    too
George..............not written, not oral ... is a good discription
George..............it is a completely new "writing space"
cle.................Yes. We also use Internet to talk together.
Gail Silverstein 2..The asynchronous- not real time. The virtual library
never closes. Great for learning...allows time to think
before responding and also allows time for
                    editing.
charla branch.......This is so true....
Julie Bergeron......but this threaded discussion ends up being complicated
to read because you're typing sometimes to answer a
questions or comment and another one comes in so what
you jsut said doens't make any sense anymore
Julie Bergeron......i'm talking about chat rooms
Todd McMahon........That promotes multitasking.
John Charles........Pay attention
John Charles........Just kidding, Julie!
Julie Bergeron......jk john
Gail Silverstein 2..Teacher's role changes in this type of communication.
From evaluator to advisor. Focus is not on clarity of
communication rather than conventions of English
Julie Bergeron......use the lingo
cle.................Mr. Farman will be in the chat.
Li Wang.............But instructor has got to control the chat for
                    classes.
Julie Bergeron......like today in hcat one of my students (7th grade) typed
in woody and couldn't understand why i put him in the
                    hall
Li Wang.............Otherwise topics will be scattered around.
George..............Focus is not on clarity of communication rather than
                    conventions of English
George..............is this a good thing
Gail Silverstein 2..The examples given in the book used e-mail. Students
wrote rought draft first then e-mailed
Julie Bergeron......well it is a new way to express oneself that keeps kids
interested, but it does seem to dumb down our ability to
                    communicatein proper english (research paper,
                    etc)
Gail Silverstein 2..yes, the focus of classroom instruction can be
                    conventions(usage, mechanics,etc.) and e-mail for
                    understanding and audience awareness.
Todd McMahon........We don't critique too many people when they speak
poorly. We aren't writing a book or dissertation. We
                    are communicating.
Pam Brierre.........Research papers ares still due. We just e-mail them to
the instuctor instead of killing trees. Our writing
skills in that respect are still necessary
Julie Bergeron......i'm guilty of that myself, not capitalizing when i know
i should in a n effort to type fast
Li Wang.............I believe someday dissertation will change its
traditional format as the technology develops.
Gail Silverstein 2..Classroom examples included 5th grade classes in
Illinois corresponding with a class in a remote area of
Alaska. They spoke of "rock people" , but the students
in Ill. did not understand and wrote back for
                    clarification
Julie Bergeron......we do seem to take what is in email, internet, etc ass
play and fun rather than caring about our communication
                    ability
Julie Bergeron......slang is definitely in
Pam Brierre.........I think e-mail is a great extension of the pen pal idea,
but it's heck on kids deperiorating handwriting
                    skills.
John Charles........eases the pain of typing fast
John Charles........Ditto
SAMAR SARMINI.......what do you mean John?
Gail Silverstein 2..an advantage to this type of writing was development of
fluency as students chose topics that interested them.
Aren't we always trying to engage students.
Todd McMahon........How's your blanket weaving skills?
George..............penmenship or keyboarding?
Julie Bergeron......that's why i said it way a cool way to communicate and
new enough to keep them interested
John Charles........Samar, i agree the handwriting skills are poorer
Gail Silverstein 2..Some people will never develop legible
handwriting-dysgraphia. They are even accomodated by
being able to use a laptop in classes.
George..............If it encourges kids to write more ... is that a
                    justification?
Pam Brierre.........It could be used as incentive. Write a handwritten
letter. The next letter can be e-mail.
Chip Farman.........waddduppp
Julie Bergeron......i think there is a difference between emailing friends
and emailinmg reseradh paper...and i think we as
educators need to tell kids the difference
Chip Farman.........Chip is in the lab!
Julie Bergeron......chippa i told them you'd probably go there
Chip Farman.........yo
Pam Brierre.........Do you miss us?
Chip Farman.........muchisimo
Todd McMahon........Handwritting like handbinding texts may do the way of
                    the dinasaur.
John Charles........Feeding the baby?
Gail Silverstein 2..I agree, Pam. Also, expository writing would not be
internet based. They're not advocating total
                    techno-education
Chip Farman.........Baby is at home. I
Li Wang.............I guess spell check will help.
George..............OK, another 2 minute breake ... then John
Chip Farman.........I'm in the lab with Cu.
George..............John
John Charles........John who??
Julie Bergeron......do you find though that being in chat rooms anmd instant
messaging has improved your keyboarding skills
George..............John's book is Web Teaching Guide ... give him a chance
                    to comment on this.
John Charles........Already did. Forgot?
Pam Brierre.........Pick on Chip. He's late
George..............Opps
Chip Farman.........let's roll
Todd McMahon........you did such a good job the first time John.
Julie Bergeron......chippa can i have some virtual mints?
SAMAR SARMINI.......John, your book is too interesting, we want to hear from
                    you again:)
John Charles........Thanks, Todd
George..............OK, we will do one more book review ... any
                    volunteers?
John Charles........Virtually bowing
Julie Bergeron......me
George..............OK, we will do one more book review ... any
                    volunteers?
Pam Brierre.........Go girl
Julie Bergeron......julie
Julie Bergeron......human computer interfacing
Todd McMahon........Any volunteers other than Julie/
John Charles........with a finger
Chip Farman.........human computer in your face
Pam Brierre.........play hice
Todd McMahon........How do you play hice?
Pam Brierre.........nice!!!!!!
George................. seems we are getting a little tired
Todd McMahon........George, do you feel the room spinning?
Li Wang.............I ws reading a book about Long Distance Learning. Not
                    finished yet.
Pam Brierre.........julie, tell us about your book
Chip Farman.........where is Cu?
John Charles........i can go for hours
George..............Julie, tell us one issue to consider in human computer
                    interface
John Charles........Stamina
Julie Bergeron......i had Dr. Longstreet last semester and she made such a
big deal about ergonomics, lighting, eye fatigue,
                    readability, etc
Chip Farman.........blah, blah, blah
Gail Silverstein 2..colors, don't forget the color of type
Julie Bergeron......but i realized that she had a point and that not only
those things but everythig should be thought about ahead
                    of time during the production
SAMAR SARMINI.......I took that course..
Li Wang.............I would say this interface would try to make
communications between machine and humanbeing more
                    easily
Pam Brierre.........what color is best to read on a white screen
cle.................To me, computer interfaces are very difficult to
                    learn.
Julie Bergeron......light grey
Pam Brierre.........on white?
Julie Bergeron......light grey screen not white, too much glare
Todd McMahon........Bright yellow.
Pam Brierre.........Grey screen...what color type
Gail Silverstein 2..so if the screen is light grey, what color text
Chip Farman.........default
Julie Bergeron......the thing that most interested me was the number of
other subjects that are involved in interfacing
                    frompsychology to sociology
charla branch.......I think any dark colors are great. Grey is a bit too
                    dim
Pam Brierre.........what about psychology
Chip Farman.........that's a different class
Li Wang.............JavaScript evolves from LiveScripts. Jave is from C and
C++. People have bother to develop these languages and I
guess it's for the conveniece of both machine and human
being. And to narrow the gap between these two.
Julie Bergeron......the study of how humans respond to certain
Julie Bergeron......stimuli
Gail Silverstein 2..example?
Julie Bergeron......what response do we as educators want to ellicit from
our students and how can we insure they will respond as
                    we want
Chip Farman.........come on Cu, there are a bunch of pc's open!
Chip Farman.........dump the apples while you can!
cle.................Thank you. Mr. Farman.
Li Wang.............You are offeding Todd, CHip. :-)
Julie Bergeron......one example is children enjoying the reward for wrong
answers more than for right so they pruposefully give
                    wrong asnwer
Todd McMahon........My G4 is screaming here at Loyola.
George..............Is human computer interface just an issue for computer
designers, or is it important considerations for web
                    authors like us?
Chip Farman.........both
Todd McMahon........It has to be a consideration for designers.
cle.................I forgot every thing that I learned from Dr. George.
                    ireturned all to him.
Julie Bergeron......for web authors too because we want children to maximize
time on task and when we know how to do that, but cannot
perfect it with the use of interent becaue you can link
                    inot infinity if not preplanned
John Charles........Human interface is an issue for web designers
cle.................Sorry, I returned...
Chip Farman.........Is Gail here?
John Charles........the end user had to be considered
Chip Farman.........probably in some private chat
Todd McMahon........I meant web designers.
Julie Bergeron......absolutely, it's just not as easy to control its use as
                    it is with software
Li Wang.............It's normal to forget. Due to constant stimuli, you'll
                    remember.
Julie Bergeron......exactly but the way software or web design is done
consdiers the end user last and human interfacing
                    consdiers the end user first
Chip Farman.........Gail, were you preaching to the choir?
John Charles........Good designer consider the enduser first
Pam Brierre.........I find many kid sites poorly designed.
Julie Bergeron......i thought this idea would generate ore of a discussion
either you're really tired or just don't care any
                    more
SAMAR SARMINI.......Definitely.. Customer satisfaction
Todd McMahon........Flash a few words and scroll some text and make the
audio play when the page loads and imagine the surfers
                    you'll drive away.
Chip Farman.........That's all she kept telling me while I was
                    venting!
John Charles........my attention span is 2 seconds
Todd McMahon........Chip, who are you talking too? If it's private please
                    post as such.
George..............BREAK
George..............Break
George..............OK, I want us to take a few minutes to discuss our
                    discussion?
cle.................However, I do not have free time to practice writing
computer programs. Now UNO has a Java course for the
                    beinning students. computer student
George..............We learn from mistakes?
George..............What mistakes did we make tonight?
John Charles........spelling
Li Wang.............Cle, we may be in the same class.
Pam Brierre.........Julie, did this book give you a better idea of what
works when disigning a page or creating a lesson with
                    students in mind?
George..............How can we do a better job?
George..............OK, I want us to take a few minutes to discuss our
                    discussion?
Todd McMahon........Of course. Most of us are new at this.
Julie Bergeron......absolutely
Gail Silverstein 2..it was confusing
John Charles........I though we did a good job
George..............We learn from mistakes?
Gail Silverstein 2..of course,
George..............What mistakes did we make tonight?
Julie Bergeron......if it weren't for chat rooms, i wouldn't have a social
                    life
John Charles........Like Todd, I wish the screen was larger
Pam Brierre.........ditto
Li Wang.............Scroll a bit fast and I could catch up.
Todd McMahon........Just as some of the conversations got going we had to
                    switch gears.
Julie Bergeron......screen being small doesn't help eye fatigue
John Charles........one has to type and watch the screen
                    simultaneously
Pam Brierre.........I like this idea, but found it easy to lose the initial
                    question and idea
SAMAR SARMINI.......I think the major drawback to chatting is sometimes you
don't know who the remark is addressed to
cle.................Thank you. It may be right.
John Charles........Context
Gail Silverstein 2..it went too fast by the time I was ready to "speak" it
                    scrolled
George..............Samar makes a good point
Li Wang.............Agree
George..............I think the major drawback to chatting is sometimes you
don't know who the remark is addressed to
Julie Bergeron......george i think this is one of the better virtual classes
                    we've done
George..............Julie is right
John Charles........I enjoyed it
cle.................I am learning.
Li Wang.............I enjoy it a lot.
Pam Brierre.........I got my laundry folded while I read.
John Charles........I felt the discussion was spirited
Todd McMahon........I updated my website.
Gail Silverstein 2..Iwould have liked to open 2 windows so I could review
                    the posted book reviews
Li Wang.............I am a shy person. If in real classroom, I would not
                    have been so loud!
SAMAR SARMINI.......I agree with Julie..
John Charles........I tried that but
charla branch.......The screen needs to be much larger....I guess you all
can tell I'm not a chat room users. I prefer to use the
Intel video camera to talk to my friends and family
                    members.
John Charles........it was hard to read both
George..............Li is right!
George..............I am a shy person. If in real classroom, I would not
                    have been so loud!
Chip Farman.........right
John Charles........i was not John Charles
Li Wang.............Should I have quote LOUD? :-
Todd McMahon........Li, maybe it's the people that sit next to you in class
                    that drown you out.
Chip Farman.........Cu?
George..............How do you shout in a chat room?
Pam Brierre.........ALL CAPS

George..............BY TYPING IS ALL CAPS
cle.................Does any one have comments about my bookreview?
Li Wang.............I didn't see your.
Todd McMahon........Wow. It got loud there for a minute.
George..............OK OK OK OK OK
SAMAR SARMINI.......I just learned (by mistake) that clicking anywhere on
the upper screen will automatically put what is quoted
in the message screen... I was wondering how George was
                    quoting some people so quickly!!
George..............Don't forget your attendance eMail
Pam Brierre.........I couldn't get to your review Mr. Le. I tried.
