Requirements for Self Evaluation
EDCI 4993-603, Spring 2001

Due Sunday May 6, 9:00 PM

Your final grade will be based in large on student's self-evaluation. Check the class syllabus for the due date of your self-evaluation.

Submit self-evaluations as follows: post Parts 1, 2 & 3 (Part 1: Class Assessment, Part 2: Class Participation, Part 3: Skills Competency to the Discussion Group setup for this purpose. I suggest that you post 3 messages, one for each part.

Send eMail to George for Part 4, (give yourself a FINAL grade).

Read the self-evaluation requirements carefully. Be sure you clear up any uncertainties about complying with this course requirement.

Part 1, Class Assessment:

This requires responses to questions, all of which are intended to encourage you to reflect on your accomplishments in this class. Please compose a 2-page maximum response that addresses questions 4 and 5 and any 1 of the other questions below.

  1. What are the two or three most important things that you learned in this course?
  2. Where did the "real learning" take place in this class?
  3. What are the two or three things you want to work on in your professional setting as a result of this class?
  4. Based on your experience in this class, explain how you might use "Authoring for the Web in a professional setting.
  5. Name one or more things that I (George) did that contributed to your understanding of authoring for the Web?

Part 2, Class Participation and Evaluation:

Please provide a 2-page analysis and evaluation of your participation in class. Consider some of the following: Do you believe you contributed meaningfully to general class discussions? In what ways? How do you evaluate your participation in group projects and discussions? How would you evaluate your skills learned in this class? Were you able to help others in class with skills you learned or had already mastered? Comment on your experience during our one virtual class meeting. Comment on our use of Discussion Groups. Comment on daily journaling. What did you learn from chatting, discussion groups, journaling, and reading eMail to iceCap (our list) that you couldn't have learned any other way?

How many unexcused absences did you have this semester? Your third unexcused absence should be considered a letter grade deduction, etc. You are responsible for bringing to the attention of your instructor any extenuating circumstances.

Part 3, Skills Competency:

Review in your mind the skills needed to complete the work for this class. This area of your evaluation requires demonstrating knowledge about building web sites. Compose a 2 page maximum response to the following: Describe 3 different strategies that can be used to build web sites. Indicate what you like and dislike about each. Explain why you prefer one strategy over another. If you like using multiple strategies, explain why.

Part 4, Give yourself a FINAL grade:

This final part provides you with an opportunity to evaluate your overall class performance. On one page, please give yourself a grade [using the point values] for each area of evaluation listed below (and as shown in the syllabus).

Provide a brief rationale to justify your final grade -- indicate whether you think that your grade reflects what you learned in class. Justify you answer.

  • 20 points - Two Book Reviews, 10 points each. This is the ONLY assessment (grade) given to you by the instructor.
  • 15 points - Mid-semester exam -- everyone received full credit (15 points).
  • 15 points -- Updating College of Education Web Site -- class project.
  • 15 points - Final Exam -- WebQuests -- group project (presentation) ... or, come up with your own ideas.
  • 25 points - Participation -- attendance and contributions to in-class activities. This includes iceCap -- written assignments posted to our list server, discussion board, field trips, and virtual class meetings.
  • 10 points - Timely completion of assignments. You cannot receive an "A" in this class unless assignments are completed on or before due dates and times. Everyone's learning depends on your completing assignments. This includes our (almost weekly) written assignments that will be eMailed to iceCap or posted on our Discussion Board.

  • Part 5, eMail Part 4 (above) to George:

    Give yourself a FINAL grade [A, B, C ...] for this class.
    For example:

    My total points
  • 19 of 20 points - Book Reviews -- everyone recieved eMail from George with a grade for each book review.
  • 15 of 15 points - Mid-semester exam -- everyone received full credit (15 points)
  • 10 of 15 points -- Updating College of Education Web Site -- class project.
  • 12 of 15 points - Final Exam -- group project, maybe a WebQuest?
  • 25 of 30 points - Participation
  • 7 of 10 points - Timely completion of assignments.
  • ------------------
  • 88 -- my final grade is B ... using the grading scale in the syllabus
  • Provide a brief rationale to justify your final grade -- indicate whether you think that your grade reflects what you learned in class. Justify you answer.
