Book Review

Two book reviews are required as part of your readings in this class. Books are self selected, but require approval by your instructor. Bring your books to class for approval. Submit the URL if the book is Web base. On approval, you can review part of a book. It is possible to substitute a literature review for one of your book reviews. Check important date for exact due dates/times for your book reviews.

Written book reviews will be posted to your own Discussion Board. Everyone in class will be able to read and comment on your reviews. One class meeting will be devoted to each book review. Time during these class meetings will be allocated equally and used for a discussion of the books we will review. Come to these classes prepared to ask questions and make comments on your fellow student's reviews. This will be possible because book reviews will be posted to our Discussion Board one week in advance of our in class discussions.

Book Review Instructions
  • The heading of a book review must consist of the complete bibliographical information about the book. Refer to an APA style guide.
  • Present an analysis (not a summary) of the content of the book. An analysis includes the following information:
    1. A discussion of the author (who he/she is, what his/her qualifications are).
    2. A description of the scope of the work (what did the author attempt to cover).
    3. A description of the organization of the work (chronological, topical, ?).
    4. A description of the emphasis of the work.
    5. A discussion of the level on which the book is written (specialists or laymen).
  • Discuss the author's arguments or conclusions.
  • Be certain that the book you review is consistent with the course objectives.
  • Writing the book review
  • Length should be 2 or 3 pages (500 words).
  • Please write and edit your review using your favorite word processor, then copy and paste it to your Discussion Board.
  • Note that it is possible to use links to appropriate web resources in your review.
  • Well written reviews are grammatical and avoid obvious spelling errors. Composition and clarity are necessary if others will benefit from your work.
  • Don't editorialize or inject personal opinions. This can happen during our in class discussions.
  • Write an essay, not an outline.
  • Point out the book's special characteristics (if any).
  • Show the relation of the book to our work in class.
  • Come to class prepared to discuss your book with our class.
