Some first class-meeting advice.
Three things:
1. Gain access. If you don't already have a home computer, or you were thinking that you need to upgrade your home computer, do it. How can you master weaving technology into your curriculum if you can't practice it day in and day out yourself, at home, for yourself?
2. Be patient. It takes time for new ideas and new tools to gain hold and have lasting and powerful effects. Be patient ... with yourself, your collogues, and your students. Remember, learning only takes place if we make mistakes.
3. Have a Purpose: Computers are not IT. This class is not about computers. It is about educators doing what for hundreds of years we have always done -- integrate technology into pedagogy.
In Class tonight:
What to expect?
What if we finish early? What is an Information Network?
What to expect?
You may be the technology coordinator for your school. You may be someone in your school that exhibits "best-practice" in use of technology. You may be one who "just helps" others when asked. You may just wish that you were one of the above.
This class is designed to help you sharpen your skills using technology, to practice teaching these skills to others, and to understand and take advantage of the current theories in using technology in an educational setting.
You will be evaluated based on new skills learned and your ability to help others acquire these skills. You will use current theories and "best practice" to develope lessons based on new knowledge. And you will develope a "school technology action plan" that supports technology integration in schools.
This is documented in the objectives for our class and used to evaluate your work.

Assignment for next week:
Part 1: Be sure to read "A Guided Tour of Web Crossing." This is an explanation of how to use our message board -- WebX'ing. Need more WebX'ing info -- try reading A Non-Programmer's Guide to Web Crossing.
Part 2: Practice using WebX'ing ...
- Read about "The Internet's Invisible Hand" by Katie Hafner
- Make notes for yourself about concepts presented in this article that you don't quite understand ... or about words / phrases that you are not quite sure of their meaning in context of the Internet.
- Before Sunday at 4:00 PM ... post two or message to the assignments section of our WebX'ing message board. These messages should be stated as questions. For example, "What is the Internet anyway?
- After Sunday at 4:00 PM ... revisit our WebX'ing message board. Post additional messages to the assignments section of our WebX'ing message board that are "Reply"s to questions. Answer as many questions as you can. Answer them even if someone already has provided an answer. Answer questions even if you are not sure. There is no penalty for wrong answers.
Part 3: Come to class next week.
