Downloading AppletMagic®

As of October 14, 1996, there is another new adaclasses.zip which fixes two bugs in Ada.Text_IO, one a verifier error, and one a security error associated with Standard Input/Output. Download it and replace the adaclasses.zip in your Applet Magic installation directory with this fixed version, if you wish to use Ada.Text_IO in an applet (neither change is necessary to use Ada.Text_IO in an Ada/Java "application").

The current release (for Solaris/Sparc and Windows) is beta version 1.6, released on October 3, 1996, with an expiration date of October 31, 1996. See here for a list of changes.

As of October 14, 1996, there is a new beta release for the Mac, which supports both 68k and PowerPC Macs! See below to download it.

Intermetrics is pleased to make a beta release copy of AppletMagic® available for downloading. This copy is usable for a limited time period, after which it will no longer function. New copies of beta releases may appear from time to time. A non-limited version may be purchased when the commercial release becomes available. You must agree to the terms of the license agreement before you may download the beta release.

AppletMagic® is an Ada95 compiler targetted to a Java Virtual Machine. It generates the same kind of portable Java byte codes and .class files as the Java compiler from Sun. This is a beta release, with unimplemented features, bugs, and limited documentation. Interoperability between Java and Ada95 is supported. Please read the release notes available online and included with the beta release. The current release is beta 1.6, available for either the Intel-WinNT/Win95 or Sparc-Solaris 2 Platforms. Here are the typical system requirements for compiling with AppletMagic®.

In order to execute the generated .class files, you will need either the Java Development Kit (JDK) from Sun (applications or applets) or Netscape 2.0 (applets only). In order to be able to interoperate between Ada95 and Java, we assume you have access to Java documentation, available with the JDK.

Here are the demo applets written in Ada 95 included with and compiled by AppletMagic®. You must be running a Java-enabled Netscape to see these work. Note that Netscape 1.x and the standard Netscape 2.0 on the Mac do not support applets, and that Netscape 2.0 on the PC and Unix machines need to have the Options:Security Preferences(General):Disable Java option box unchecked.

The download file for Windows and the Sparc is in .zip format, and you will need an unzip utility. Here are the installation instructions. Please check any README files for more up-to-date instructions before installing. The size of the zip file is just over 1 MB.

The download file for the Mac is a self-extracting archive, available in BinHex as well as MacBinary format.

To download AppletMagic® now, click the download request form. This form will ask you for a few pieces of information so that we know who has received the beta release, and then download the beta release.

Happy webbing!
