[Image] IBM Announces OpenDoc WebPak

September 18, 1996 -- Today, IBM announced the OpenDoc WebPak, an IBM PartPak of OpenDoc* components designed to provide seamless integration between desktop applications and the World Wide Web (WWW) based internet content. These OpenDoc components provide integrated support within any OpenDoc or Active-x* compliant application for Java* applets, Netscape* Plug-ins and HTML documents on OS/2 WARP*, Windows 95* and Windows NT*. The OpenDoc WebPak is planned to ship in 4Q96 as a feature of the OpenDoc environment and will also be made available for download from the WWW at IBM's Club for Enterprise Object Technology (http://www.software.ibm.com/clubopendoc/). IBM will rollout key elements of the OpenDoc WebPak as beta code in late September and will continue to make additional elements of the WebPak available for download throughout early 4Q96.

Developers who are building desktop applications that are OpenDoc-compliant will gain integrated WWW functionality without needing to write a single line of code! They simply bundle the OpenDoc WebPak components with their applications and they automatically 'inherit' the functionality to seamlessly handle Java Applets, Netscape plug-ins and HTML document browsing, allowing them to focus on other aspects of their development efforts. End users of OpenDoc or Active-x compliant applications effortlessly gain support for using WWW-based content in their applications simply by installing the OpenDoc WebPak on their systems. Users will be able to use common data transfer operations (e.g., drag/drop and clipboard) to include WWW content, gained from the desktop or a web browser, in their applications. In addition, when the OpenDoc WebPak is installed in conjunction with the IBM Multimedia OpenDoc PartPak, OpenDoc applications also gain integrated support for WWW-based multimedia content (gif, jpg, audio, video).

IBM is committed to deploying a scaleable component solution that spans traditional desktops and network-centered environments and which provides access to common distributed services within the enterprise. The integration of OpenDoc (desktop component model) and Java/Java Beans (networked component model) is a key element in delivering this scaleable component architecture based on industry standards. IBM's OpenDoc Webpak delivers the first step in the integration of dekstop OpenDoc (and Active-X) applications and Java-based networked applications. IBM will continue to provide higher degrees of integration as it delivers the Java Beans component model and future releases of OpenDoc.

The OpenDoc WebPak consists of the following OpenDoc components:

* OpenDoc Java Applet Handler * OpenDoc Netscape Plug-In Handler * Netscape Plug-In for OpenDoc Components * OpenDoc HTML Document Browser Handler

Additional information is available in the WebPak advertisement in the Club's Planetarium.
