Sanga Pages lets users create apps for corporate intranets

September 18,1996 Margie Semilof

ATLANTA - Software that turns Web browsers into full-fledged desktops was released by Sanga International this week at Networld+Interop in Atlanta.

The software, which is written in the Java programming language, is called Sanga Pages. It was demonstrated by Sanga, a six-month-old company based in Burlington, Mass., which consists of about 45 employees including more than a few former Lotus alumni.

Sanga Pages lets users create applications and modify corporate databases using a Web browser like Netscape Communications Corp.'s Navigator or Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer. The company has built packaged applications for several vertical markets but the product is largely designed for corporate developers who want to create their own.

``This is a shrink-wrapped, drag and drop Java application,'' says Shane Maine, Sanga president.

The technology produces an effect on a browser similar to what Lotus Development Corp. will do as it brings Notes to the Internet, says Erik Smith, enterprise/Intranet segment manager [at JavaSoft, the Sun subsidiary which developed Java.

``This is the first product that lets users run groupware using a browser and using an intranet as the backbone,'' Smith says.

The software consists of Pages Desktop Client, an applet that gives browsers an interface into Sanga Pages applications. The Pages Desktop Server lets clients access information that represents links to data sources.

The Pages View Design is a query tool that lets users create custom views of data, Pages Form Design is a set of graphical user interface design components to create front-ends for custom applications.

There is also a script component, a security element, support for standards-based email and a data replication feature.

The software ships immediately. The Application Developer Package costs $995. A single server Enterprise Solution Package that supports 100 users is $1,795. Sanga Pages 2.0 will be available in January but Maine wouldn't elaborate on the features expected to be part of that release.
