Study: By 2000, 76% of U.S. PCs Linked to Web

International Data Corp. released on Monday an estimate that by the end of 1996 the number of world-wide connections to the Web will reach 30 million and 34.6 million users because of shared use of home PCs.

By the year 2000, IDG forecasted that the number of devices will surpass the number of users as a result of multiple Internet access points within the home: second PCs, TVs, videogames and specialized Internet devices.

By then, the number of devices will surpass 233 million and the number of users 163 million. The Framingham, MA-based market research firm predicted that within four years more than half of all installed PCs worldwide (76% in the U.S.) will be on the Web.
