[I]f early Java applications run too slowly for your taste, some new technologies coming from Sun Microsystems due next year should provide some relief.

Sun released details on Friday about a souped-up chip that will likely serve as the power behind such applications as network computers, PDAs, set-top boxes and smart phones that connect to the Web.

The picoJava I microprocessor delivers about 20 times the Java performance of a X86 or the Pentium class of chip, and more than five times the performance of just-in-time compilers, company officials say.

The picoJava I is the first in a series of JavaChip processors under development by Sun. The picoJava will be at the heart of Sun's microJava processor line, which are due out in mid-1997.
