Question: What are the perspectives of teachers involved
in the development of World Wide Web Sites?

An open letter to my students:

As I discussed with you during our first class, like yourself, I am a graduate student. In this semester, I will finish my course work towards a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction. You may remember my background includes a MS in Computer Science and thirty years experience as a software engineer.

In our class tonight (Monday, February 1), I will seek your permission to conduct a small scale qualitative research study. The first purpose of this research project is for my learning experience. I do believe that the question posed in this study is an important and interesting one, and is worthy of study. So, the second purpose of this project is for increasing my knowledge and yours about how and why World Wide Web sites are important in education.

With your consent, this research project will include three parts. First, tonight I will perform a thirty minute observation. This will happen during the time Dr. Gregory Levitt is making a presentation to our class. During the observation I will be taken notes that reflect the events and experiences of tonight's class. Second, at some time durning this semester I will interview one volunteer student from our class. This will be a thirty minute tape recorded interview and will occur outside of our normal class time. Third, at some time during this semester I will conduct a focus group interview with for four to six students from our class. This also will be a thirty minute tape recorded interview and will occur outside of our normal class time. Finally, prior to the end of the semester, I will make the results of this research project available to everyone in our class.

Please keep in mind that participation is voluntary and will NOT be considered as part of your final grade evaluation. As part of my research exercise, I need to formally obtain your permission to conduct my research. Please review the consent form.

Thanks,
George
