Assignment for next week:
Part 1, getting ready to meet virtually!
Considering ethical, legal, and human issues involving the use of technology in schools:
Each group will decide tonight on any area of interest (a topic).
See Links to Explore for some places to begin your research.
Each group member will conduct independent research concerning this topic.
Members will post message(s) to the group's discussion board with their findings.
These messages need to be posted before 4:00 PM on Sunday (September 10).
Each group member will become familiar with all messages posted to their Discussion Board.
Everyone is also responsible for what is posted in all the Group's discussions.
Part 2, our virtual class meeting!
At 4:30 PM on Wednesday September 13, our entire class will (virtually) meet at our Group Chat Table.
We will chit-chat 'till about 5:00 PM
At this time, groups will, in a rotating schedule (see below), enter their own Chat Area and begin a formal chat of their research topic.
At any one time, only two groups will be assigned to be in their chart area.
Members of other groups will matriculate -- visit each groups chats in progress.
On signal by the moderator, we will change which groups are in chats and which groups are matriculating.
You can expect that chats will last about 20 minutes, and that each group will have at least two chat sessions. In subsequent chats, try to inject what you may have learned by visiting other chats.
During a group chat, members of that group are responsible to, and should prepare in advance to carry the chat. Comments prepared in advanced and copy/pasted to the chat is a good idea. If each member has 3 or 4 comments prepared in advance, we should carry the day!
Members should also ask questions of their own members.
All those matriculating are welcome (and expected) to ask questions and make comments.
Tentative schedule for chats are (2 groups chatting at once):
4:30 : Meet at the Group Table for a chit-chat
5:00 : beginning of formal chat session
5:05 : Now chatting -- Educators Lite & EdTechs
5:20 : short break
5:25 : Now chatting -- The Seekers & EdTechs
5:40 : short break
5:45 : Now chatting -- The Seekers & SnoCaps
6:00 : short break
6:05 : Now chatting -- EdTechs & SnoCaps
6:20 : short break
6:25 : Now chatting -- Educators Lite & The Seekers
6:40 : short break
6:45 : Now chatting -- Educators Lite & SnoCaps
7:00 : short break, end of formal chat session
7:05 : Debriefing, meet at the Group Table
The Chat moderator, that's me, George, will announce when it is time for each schedule change. I will set my messages to appear in red, and if I am the only red, it should be easy for everyone to keep up.
Some Chatting advice:
As best you can, address a comment or question to an individual by name.
Allow time (much longer than is usually in normal conversation) for responses.
When the number of people in a chat exceeds 10, matriculators begin to think about moving to another chat.
Feel free to repeat questions, it gets very confusing trying to keep up.
Try not to chat over other members of your group. Give extra time for reactions to posting by your own group members. It will take 30 or more seconds to see reactions from others.
Try to avoid multiple members posting at the same time comments prepared in advance. Maybe a little advanced planning is needed here. For example agree in advance that group members will take turns leading chats, while others make comments or ask questions.
Each group will lead 3 chats, maybe this can be used this to bring order to your chats.
Above all else, remember:
This is practice for future virtual class meetings.
I, George, planned this meeting.
Future virtual class meetings will be planned by YOU!
