Be sure you understand next week's assignment.

Journal before you leave class tonight.

Field trip to Loyola University, February 21st, thanks Todd!

We will include in our class schedule as many field trips as is practical. Talk to George if you want to volunteer your school as host of a field trip.

In Class tonight:

  • Be sure you read the info in House Keeping
  • EDCI 61?? is approved for this class -- and I expect that everyone will be moved from 4993 to 61??. I expect that I will be able to execute the swap myself. Let you know more next week.
  • What is Technology Integration, good job - THANKS
  • A fatal exception OE has occurred at 0028:C0011E35 in VXD UMM(01)
Press any key to terminate the current application.
  • Every thing looks like a nail?
  • Did anyone browse "Links to Explore" during this last week?
  • We have groups ... and groups will meet tonight!
  • Every group MUST have at least 3 members.
  • Everyone is required to belong to at least 2 groups.
  • Swapping between groups is OK with George's approval
  • It is George's fondest hope that everyone will join at least 1 other group -- I will publish each group's major topic ASAP. Join one or more other groups that will be working on topices of interest to you.
  • Remember, each group's goal is to teach the rest of us -- keeping in mind the course objectives and our major topics
  • Let's talk about next week's assignments -- this is not a big thing ( 3 people teaching for 10 minutes )
  • Groups 1 - 7 will meet for up to 1 hour.
  • Groups 8 -14 will meet after that.
  • Each group's foreperson will eMail George the first idea for a "major topic" that meets the objectives of this class.
  • Copy and paste URL's.
  • Let's practice a little with WebX'ing.
  • Everyone will make a discussion group (in Us) for themselves. This is where book reviews will be posted.
  • Our next "next assighmnet" will involve Groups 8 -14
  • Don't worry
  • You will learn
  • I wont leave your side

  • Groups:

  • We have groups! Group foreperson's name appears in green. Forepersons are responsible for ensuring order, otherwise group members are equals in all respects.

  • House Keeping
  • Your first book review is due in 3 weeks.
  • Have you cleared your book with George?
  • This "House Keeping" section of our syllabus will contain information that may not be mentioned during class. But, you are still responsible for knowing and acting on the information here. This is true even if you missed class.
  • In fact, if you do miss class, you are still responsible for every thing on this weekly syllabus, especially the assignment for next week.
  • Did you complete your Class Web Page.
  • Did you setup your TechX'ing account
  • Did you get your picture taken.
  • The new State of Louisiana Cetrification Programs in technology.
  • My New Year resolution is to start class on time. For us this means 4:30 (not 4:35 or 4:50). Please respect your classmates and instructor -- make every effort to be here on time. If you must be late, be courteous -- sent us an eMail so that we know when to expect you.
  • This Syllabus page will change every week. Changes will (almost always) be ready by 4:00 PM on Sunday before class.
  • (Almost) All assignments are due at 4:00 PM on Sunday before class.
  • Every class will start with Questions -- your questions. Show me that you are interested in our class by being prepaired to ask questions, questions about our class, about computers, about any old thing. Don't make me feel silly at the beginning of class -- when I say "any questions?" -- and all I hear is "the sounds of silence."
  • You are expected to keep up with not just your weekly assignments, but that of all your classmates. All assignments will be available to everyone vie eMail or our Discussion Board.

  • Assignment for next week: in two parts.

    Part 1
    Technology Inservice -- Groups 1 through 7
How will you organize a group presentation in just one week?

Technology Inservice : a short (10 minute) group presentation
    1. Each group's foreperson will post a message before 4:00 PM Sunday, Jan. 28 that briefly explains what will be covered during the in class presentation.
    2. In class on Wednesday, Jan.31, Groups 1 through 7 will each give a short (10 minute) presentation.
    3. Questions and comments will follow.
    4. Links to Explore is a good starting place to develope ideas for this assignmnet.
    5. Draw your ideas about what to cover from the list below.

  • What is an Inservice?
  • If you group had to pick a topic for a Technology Inservice, what would it be?
  • As an adult learner, what do you expect from an Inservice.
  • Explain how Inservices works at your school.
  • Tell us about what you like and don't like about Inservice.
  • What would you do to -- Plan an Inservice?
  • What else?
  • Hint: During your group's presentation try not to repeat what other groups said -- comment on or add to what came before your presentation. Think on your feet?
  • Part 2
Read and comment on an article about an Illinois public school that admits the gifted, offers Prozac and achieves stunning success. But is it fair?

  • Post a message on Response to Assignments discussion board
  • Read and react to the messages of others.
  • Your initial response is due by 4:00 PM on Sunday, Jan.24
  • Your reactions to the messages of others are due before class on Wednesday, Jan.31
  • This is NOT a required assignment.

  • How will we meet the objectives of this class?

  • One goal of this class is for you to acquire the skills needed to document, plan, design, implement and deliver "technology integration" in schools.
  • To accomplish this you will do all of these things yourself, working in groups, with guidance from George.
  • There are at least nine (9) major topics of this course. They are:
    1. Curriculum planning & design
    2. National, State, and Local standards and guidelines
    3. Teaching hypermedia to faculty and students
    4. Teaching media integration
    5. Teaching responsible use
    6. Design and planning for staff development
    7. Design, develop, and deliver unit plans
    8. Plan and implement field trips to observe and compare methods and strategies in use in schools today
    9. Field trip documentation and assessment of: instruction, staff development, facilities, resource management, internet connectivity.
    10. There could be others? George is open to ideas.
  • For both your midterm and final exam all of the above topics will be covered by group presentations that "teach us" about a topic.
  • We will form groups next week.
  • Each group is responsible for one topic for midterm exam.
  • Each group is responsible for one topic for final exam.
  • Everyone will belong to at least 2 groups --
  • Looking at Important Dates, you will see that there is a date certain for completing your midterm and final project presentations.
  • If we schedule 4 field trips, then 4 groups will be responsible for planning, 4 groups for documentation and assessment.
  • Since it is your job to "teach" us about these topics, this teaching can take the form one or more "Assignment for next week"
  • REMEMBER, we learn by making mistakes.
  • Don't worry
  • You will learn
  • I wont leave your side
