General learning mainly refers to 96 minimum credits for liberal studies for
undergraduate level degree seeking. As for the concentration study, it includes (1) in-
depth study of a discipline, and (2) interdisciplinary: the study of a theme, or study in
preparation for a profession or vocation. Students are able to choose subjects in a
traditional manner, or choose innovative degree programs that incorporate various
nontraditional modes of study.
ESC is distance learning approach: educational technology initiatives. The
school assists students ignore the process of technological implementation and go on
with their own studies.
We feel Empire State College's SUNY Learning Network and the Alliance
Program together are a strong representation of the "Conceptual Framework"
presented at the beginning of this class. Coherent purposes and content, integrating
learners and pedagogy to form a postmodern epistemology that is a model for the
Information Age.
Distinctive Academic Programs
Empire State University (SUNY) offers students in today's work force the
opportunity to obtain a degree in two distinctive concentrations: Liberal Arts/Sciences
and Professional/Career Studies at any one the the 40 regional centers in N.Y. State.
At SUNY. the college student may obtain there associate's or bachelors degree via a
wide range of distinctive curricula and programs: Associate Degree and Bachelor
Degree. Individual degree program concentrations may be drawn from the following:
Associate Degree in the Arts, Associates Degree in the Sciences, Bachelor of Arts,
Bachelor of Science, and aBachelor of Professional Development.
The Center of Distance Learning enables students to visit or take classes off-
site through telephone, mail and other media while independently studying under the
guidance of an academic counselor/faculty advisor. Like the CDL, The SUNY
Learning Network enables students to use their own personal computer from home to
participate in online classes. All credit taken via the Learning Network are transferable
to any institution within the SUNY system. If the student wishes to receive training that
is more facilitative to their job the Harry Van Arsdale Jr. School ofLabor Studies and
Forum and the Bell Atlantic Corporate College Program is available.
The Labor Studies program allows students in the field of labor related issues
the educational opportunities for advancement in their jobs and unions. FORUM
students who have years of experience in the business field are provided the
opportunity to specialize in their professional areas while studying the other functions
of the enterprise "from their own perspectives and on their own timetable". This
unique format of learning allows the student to attend six weekend retreats per year in
a wide variety of independent and distance learning projects.
International Programs encourage students to study overseas at the University
of Bristol in the United Kingdom and in the international business and economics at
various locations in the European Economic Community.
Lastly, the Alliance Program allows students who work in the networks system
fields to obtain Associates and Bachelor's degrees by taking single courses offered by
Empire State College, Lucent Technologies, CWA and IBEW's union-management
partnerships and the Network Systems/Installation Workplace of the Future Council.
