House Keeping
  • Last Class?
  • Unlike traditional documents, web pages are almost never finished. Web sites are the same. We can say that a web site is ALWAYS under construction.
  • Based on this ... you have an orginizational problem now that your are about to begin your second web site project. Why?
  • One feature of a web page is its ability to display itself on any computer.
  • Another feature ... most web pages are editable by anyone, turning the document into you own ... this is called reuse (note: you need special access, like FTP, to change an original document). Web pages are 100 constructed of plain text. If this is true, where do the picture come from?
  • The internet lets us transport web pages around the world in the blink of an eye.
  • The editability, displayability, and transportability of web pages makes them unique ... no other document format comes close.
  • Today is your day ... what do you want to do? Ask for help, ask me or someone in your group.
  • Meet with your group today ... its not too early to begin planning next week's Group WWW Site Project.
  • Don't forget to use Links to Explore, there are many useful links there!
  • Don't forget to Journal.before leaving class.
  • Anyone notice that I widen the first syllabus page (this one)?

  • In Class Today
  • I think that Sharon Lewis has dropped?
  • Everyone else succeeded in posting their web site somewhere on the Web!
  • All but two of us use our College of Education's Web Server.
  • I judge everyone's first web site project to be acceptable.

  • Let's talk about last Thursday's class
    1. My general comment -- "... everything happened fast ..."
    2. Everyone, what strategy did you used to build your web site? Did you consider others?
    3. Everyone, what success did you have in using FTP to "Upload & Download" your site?
    4. Was reading Emma eMails helpful in understanding the work of others?
    5. Was reading messages in individual Discussion Groups helpful in understanding the work of others?
    6. What was annoying about participating in our Thursday afternoon chat?
    7. What else?
    8. Tell me something positive about our virtual learning experience.
    9. Let's decide -- are we doing this again this coming Thursday?

  • What about Website Project 2 -- due this Thursday, July 20 at 9:00 AM?
    1. I expect greater focus on the content for this project ... for example -- the final product should be useable by you in a processional setting, as a teacher or whatever your profession. What is the bigger picture, how does your web site fit in your larger professional role? Who is your audience. What resources other than your web site are needed? What are Louisiana's content standards? How will you evaluate uses of this web site? List sources of images, music or text that you're using. Provide links back to the original source. Say thanks to anyone who provided resources or help. List any books and other analog media that you used as information sources as well.
    2. I expect that this is a group project.
    3. If this is a problem, talk to me.
    4. Some of you are in Dr. Levitt's class that meets in the mornings. It is possible to coordinate this project with work in Dr. Levitt's class. You will need to emplane to me and to Dr. Levitt the how this will satisfy the requirements of both classes.
    5. What else?

  • What about our Work on the College of Education Website?
    1. I think that we might have to juggle our Groups to even things out?
    2. We will organize ourself so that each of our groups will be responsible for one major section of the website, for example, C&L, Special Ed., etc.
    3. Much info on the current site is outdated, for example, faculty lists, eMail addresses, phone #'s, and broken links.
    4. A missing component that needs attention is specific information for new and perspective students. Answering the question "Why I want to be an educator?"
    5. What else?

  • Assignment:

Due before 9:00 AM on Tuesday: At the beginning of class on Tuesday, we will have a brief discussion about copyright law and its effect on digital documents. To prepare for this you should invest some time researching this topic. Search engines like Yahoo and Google will be very helpful. If you eMail Emma URL's of interesting websites, I will add them to our Links to Explore page. Thanks.
