  • Assignment for next week:
Part 1: Research for yourself the issues involving web sites used in an educational setting. Several web evaluation recourses were discussed in class. These should provide you with a place to start.

Part 2: As you discover and learn about the advantages and problems of the Web in education, post this information to the assignments section of our WebX'ing message board. You should include in your message (copy & paste) the complete URL of a web page that you felt was particularly informative. Explain the what, why, and how this site peaked your interest. This part should be complete before 4:00 PM on Sunday, Sept. 8.

Part 3: After 4:00 PM Sunday, revisit our discussion on evaluating web recourses. Explore what your classmates have to contribute to this topic. Add your two cents by posting replies to their messages. In class next week, we will practice evaluating web sites.

Part 4: Without giving away your opinion about a web site, send eMail to iceCap@ed.uno.edu and suggest web sites that you think would be interesting to evaluate. Include the URL of the site in your eMail. Please pick sites that you think are positive examples. Please pick sites that you think are negative examples. please pick sites that you think have both positive and negative features when used in an educational setting. Remember not to give away your opinion. From your suggestions, I will pick several sites for us to evaluate together.

    House Keeping
  • This "House Keeping" section of our syllabus will contain information that may not be mentioned during class. But, you are still responsible for knowing and acting on the information here. This is true even if you missed class.
  • In fact, if you do miss class, you are still responsible for every thing on this weekly syllabus, especially the assignment for next week.
  • It is my intention to start class on time. For us this means 4:30 (not 4:35 or 4:50). Please respect your classmates and instructor -- make every effort to be here on time. If you must be late, be courteous -- sent us an eMail so that we know when to expect you.
  • This Syllabus page will change every week. Changes will (almost always) be ready by 4:00 PM on Sunday before class.
  • (Almost) All assignments are due at 4:00 PM on Sunday before class.
  • Every class will start with Questions -- your questions. Show me that you are interested in our class by being prepared to ask questions, questions about our class, about computers, about any old thing. Don't make me feel silly at the beginning of class -- when I say "any questions?" -- and all I hear is "the sounds of silence."
  • You are expected to keep up with not just your weekly assignments, but that of all your classmates. All assignments will be available to everyone vie eMail or our Discussion Board.
  • Do you have an eMail address? If not, every UNO student can have a UNO eMail address.
  • When sending mail to iceCap, to George, or to anyone in our class ... sign your eMail (type your name at bottom or top of every message) because it is not always obvious from your eMail address who you are. Attachments are OK, so long as they are NOT the main text of your message. Keep in mind that not everyone will be able to receive your attachment and/or open it.

  • Some first class-meeting advice.

    Three things:
    1. Gain access. If you don't already have a home computer, or you were thinking that you need to upgrade your home computer, do it. How can you master weaving technology into your curriculum if you can't practice it day in and day out yourself, at home, for yourself?
    2. Be patient. It takes time for new ideas and new tools to gain hold and have lasting and powerful effects. Be patient ... with yourself, your colleagues, and your students. Remember, learning only takes place if we make mistakes.
    3. Have a Purpose: Computers are not IT. This class is not about computers. It is about educators doing what for hundreds of years we have always done -- integrate technology into pedagogy.
  • Don't worry
  • You will learn
  • I wont leave your side
