  • What about the "WWW in the Curricula" -- what is this class about?

    "Using Web-based resources in lesson planning and delivery"

    Let's start -- during this exercise we will:
    1. Form groups of 2 (maybe 3)
    2. Use multiple web-based search engines
    3. Use our "Sites to Explore" resource ... like a menu of
    4. Use multiple browser windows
    5. Use a web browser and other software at the same time
    6. Collect URLs as an annotated bibliography
    7. Share with class what you discovered
    8. Use MS Word to create a web page
    9. Use MS Word to compose answers to the questions below
    10. Copy and past your answers to a WebX'ing discussion
    11. Upload (FTP) our MS Word web page to our "Class Web Site"
    12. Develope a lesson plan
    13. Use the idea of a "Treasure Hunt"
    14. ... or some idea of your own
    15. Integrate Web resources in a lesson
    16. Figure someway to make the topic a part of some lager theme
    17. Topic is: "9-11"
    18. World Trade Center Photo Essay
    19. Remember to include URLs

    13. For Windows -- Download and install freeFTP
    14. Another free FPT client is WS_FTP.
    15. ZDNet is a good place to search for free and almost free software!
    16. For Mac -- ask George for help ... look for a FTP client named Transmit. It is not free, but you can use if free for 30 before it starts asking you to pay a license fee.

    Assignment for next week:
    1. Review our discussion about "Evaluating Websites" (from this week) ... this will be discussed in class next week. There are many very good web sites referenced here. You should invest time in reviewing these so that you may contribute to next week's class.

    2. Think of idea's for developing your own websites
      List your ideas here

    3. Work towards getting FTP working on the computer you will use to develop websites
      Ask for help!


    House Keeping
  • This "House Keeping" section of our syllabus will contain information that may not be mentioned during class. But, you are still responsible for knowing and acting on the information here. This is true even if you missed class.
  • In fact, if you do miss class, you are still responsible for every thing on this weekly syllabus, especially the assignment for next week.
  • It is my intention to start class on time. For us this means 4:30 (not 4:35 or 4:50). Please respect your classmates and instructor -- make every effort to be here on time. If you must be late, be courteous -- sent us an eMail so that we know when to expect you.
  • This Syllabus page will change every week. Changes will (almost always) be ready by 4:00 PM on Sunday before class.
  • (Almost) All assignments are due at 4:00 PM on Sunday before class.
  • Every class will start with Questions -- your questions. Show me that you are interested in our class by being prepared to ask questions, questions about our class, about computers, about any old thing. Don't make me feel silly at the beginning of class -- when I say "any questions?" -- and all I hear is "the sounds of silence."
  • You are expected to keep up with not just your weekly assignments, but that of all your classmates. All assignments will be available to everyone vie eMail or our Discussion Board.
  • Do you have an eMail address? If not, every UNO student can have a UNO eMail address.
  • When sending mail to iceCap, to George, or to anyone in our class ... sign your eMail (type your name at bottom or top of every message) because it is not always obvious from your eMail address who you are. Attachments are OK, so long as they are NOT the main text of your message. Keep in mind that not everyone will be able to receive your attachment and/or open it.


    • Some first class-meeting advice.

    Three things:
    1. Gain access. If you don't already have a home computer, or you were thinking that you need to upgrade your home computer, do it. How can you master weaving technology into your curriculum if you can't practice it day in and day out yourself, at home, for yourself?
    2. Be patient. It takes time for new ideas and new tools to gain hold and have lasting and powerful effects. Be patient ... with yourself, your colleagues, and your students. Remember, learning only takes place if we make mistakes.
    3. Have a Purpose: Computers are not IT. This class is not about computers. It is about educators doing what for hundreds of years we have always done -- integrate technology into pedagogy.
